A Legacy of Compassion, Care, and Medical Excellence

Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital (MMSH) is one of the oldest healthcare institutions in Kano State, with roots dating back to the mid-1920s. Founded between 1926 and 1927 as City Hospital, it started with fewer than twenty beds and focused on providing basic medical care to residents within Kano city and surrounding communities.

In 1976, the hospital was renamed in honor of General Murtala Ramat Muhammad, ushering in a period of expansion and transformation. As facilities and services grew, MMSH attained Specialist Hospital status, developing core departments that strengthened its position as a key referral center in Northern Nigeria.

Today, MMSH is one of the largest government hospitals in the region, providing specialist and emergency care to thousands of patients daily, with a continued commitment to quality and accessible healthcare.

Historical Milestones

From Humble Beginnings to a Regional Hub - A Legacy of Service and Excellence

Founding and Early Years

Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital traces its origins to the mid-1920s, when it was established as City Hospital in Kano between 1926 and 1927. With an initial capacity of just 15–16 beds, the hospital began serving the growing healthcare needs of the city and surrounding communities.

Its early mission was to provide basic medical care and outpatient services, particularly for residents within the historic city walls who had limited access to formal healthcare. By laying this foundation, the hospital built community trust and set the stage for its growth into a major healthcare institution in Northern Nigeria.

Renaming and Expansion

In 1976, the hospital was renamed Murtala Muhammad Hospital in honor of General Murtala Ramat Muhammad, former Head of State of Nigeria. This change reflected its growing prominence and recognition within the region.

As the hospital expanded its facilities and services, it was later designated a Specialist Hospital. This status highlighted its increasing role in providing advanced medical and surgical care to the people of Kano and surrounding communities.

Upgrading To Tertiary Institution

During the 1990s and 2000s, Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital expanded into a major tertiary referral center, establishing specialized departments including Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, Radiology, and Emergency Care.

The hospital began serving not only Kano State but also neighboring states and patients from nearby countries, such as Niger Republic and Benin, solidifying its role as a regional healthcare hub.

MMSH Today: Serving the Region

Today, MMSH stands as one of the largest government hospitals in Northern Nigeria, having grown from its original small capacity to several hundred beds.

The hospital handles around 7,000 outpatient visits daily and up to 1,000 deliveries each month, highlighting its vital role in maternal and public health across the region.
